Do not use
People flatten a Canva thumbnail for Studio, then on the phone tap a different Recents still as the Shorts cover. Two files, one of them never cleaned.
Why Photos stills are dirty when the Short is not
Typical gallery covers:
- Gemini / ChatGPT save used as a “title card”
- Canva or Express story-sized export
- iPhone Clean Up / Pixel Magic Editor
- Lightroom mobile export sitting in Recents
None of that is in the MP4. YouTube still stores the cover raster. Cross-posting that same still to Instagram Stories is how AI Info shows up on Meta while the Short itself looked fine.
HEIC: convert to JPG, then strip. Conversion is not cleanup. HEIC iPhone guide .
Gallery-cover workflow
- In Photos, confirm which file (Edited vs original, date, size).
- Share to browser (Files / AirDrop after you know the file - not WhatsApp).
- Strip C2PA and XMP . Optional: AI metadata checker first.
- Album Shorts_Cover_Ready - only cleaned stills.
- Shorts: set cover from gallery → that album only.
- If you later upload a Studio thumbnail , that is a new file - clean it on the thumbnail article’s path, do not assume the gallery cover bytes were reused.
Scheduling (Later, Buffer, YouTube Studio drafts) that grab “latest image” can re-attach Recents. Point them at Cover_Ready.
Live Shorts: changing cover later
Replacing the cover uploads a new still . Use a freshly cleaned JPG. The old cover’s tags already sat on the previous asset.
What this page does not cover
- YouTube thumbnail size, CTR, or Studio UI.
- MP4/container metadata.
- Turning off YouTube AI content labels in a settings toggle.
Clean the gallery still you will set as Shorts cover, then finish the strip on the YouTube upload-prep tool . Same cleaned bytes can later feed Instagram; this page’s job is the Shorts gallery cover. Prep only.

Set a YouTube Shorts cover from Photos without leftover file tags
Identify the gallery still, strip C2PA/XMP, then choose it as the Shorts cover.
- Pick the cover file - In Photos/Gallery, identify the exact still you will tap - not a near-duplicate.
- Inspect that still - Optional: run the AI metadata checker (/ai-metadata-checker) if it was Magic Editor, Gemini, Canva, or a download.
- Strip C2PA and XMP - Clean in the browser; save Cover_Ready back to an album that only has cleaned covers.
- Set cover from gallery - Shorts editor → cover → add from gallery → select only the cleaned file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Shorts gallery cover the same as a YouTube thumbnail?
No. The thumbnail article is the 1280×720 (or similar) custom thumbnail you upload in YouTube Studio. This page is only: Shorts editor → cover → choose from Photos/Gallery.
Does the Shorts video file include the gallery cover?
No. Cover and MP4 are separate. A Magic Editor or Gemini still from Photos can tag the Short even when the clip is phone footage.
What if I use auto cover from the video?
Auto cover is a frame from the MP4. That is not this workflow. This page is add/replace cover from the gallery.
Should I clean every photo in Photos?
No. Clean the still you will set as cover (and any alternate you might swap). Keep an archive original. Remove AI Label Team
