XMP vs EXIF vs C2PA - What's the Difference?
August 20, 2026
IPTC in one minute
IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) fields carry captions, keywords, copyright, and creator credit. They often live inside XMP on modern exports, or in legacy IIM blocks. Etsy and stock workflows care about IPTC for discoverability; Instagram AI Info is still driven mainly by C2PA and XMP AI tags, not keywords alone.
When you deliver a social master, many creators strip AI-related IPTC together with C2PA. Keep a separate archive copy with full IPTC if agencies or clients require it.
AI metadata beyond C2PA
“AI metadata” is not one switch. Common containers:
- C2PA / JUMBF - signed provenance from ChatGPT, Firefly, Photoshop generative fill, Microsoft exports.
- XMP - prompts, Software tags, Lightroom history, sometimes generation parameters.
- PNG text chunks - ComfyUI / Automatic1111 workflow JSON (sibling to XMP, not EXIF).
- EXIF Software - occasional AI app name on phone edits; privacy GPS lives here too.
If the worry is Made with AI on upload, rank C2PA → XMP → chunks first. If the worry is GPS on an Etsy original , rank EXIF - or spot-check with the image privacy analyzer before you strip.
How to tell them apart
EXIF appears the moment you shoot, if the camera writes it. You clean it for privacy: a marketplace original or a chat “document” send still carries GPS after Instagram has stripped the copy on its own servers.
XMP appears when an editor or generator writes XML. Lightroom can store your tone curve. Midjourney can store the prompt. Lightroom’s own “minimize metadata” export is not a reliable substitute for a last-mile strip. A .xmp sidecar next to a RAW is the recipe in a second file - delete or omit it when the client did not buy that.
C2PA is a signed manifest. A small Generative Fill can add an AI-edited assertion to an otherwise real photo. That is the layer Instagram is known to read for AI Info . Screenshots rarely contain it; Firefly downloads usually do.
ComfyUI workflow JSON inside PNG text chunks is a sibling problem, not XMP. Flatten to JPEG and treat whatever Photoshop writes next as a new packet.
If you only remember one ranking: clean C2PA when the worry is an Instagram AI Info label, clean XMP when the worry is a prompt or Lightroom recipe in a client ZIP, clean EXIF when the worry is a map pin. You do not need three downloads to do all three.
One file, one pass
Stripping only EXIF leaves Firefly credentials in place. Stripping only C2PA can leave a prompt in XMP. The three tool URLs on this site are the same browser cleaner with different lead stories. Default is a full pass. Keep a master when a client still needs aperture or GPS.
Keep C2PA when disclosure is required. Keep XMP in the studio catalog if you need to reopen a recipe. Keep EXIF on archive masters. The file that leaves the studio is the one that should be clean.
When you want that full pass without picking a layer-first URL, use the metadata remover , then upload the download. Re-exporting from Lightroom or Photoshop after a clean writes new packets - clean the last file you send.
Remove XMP, EXIF, and C2PA in one pass
Strip the three common image metadata layers, then upload the download.
- Choose the file you will send - Use the exported JPEG or PNG, not a RAW plus sidecar unless you mean to hand over the recipe.
- Run one full metadata pass - Run the default full pass. Keep a master if you must keep camera fields.
- Upload the download - Post that file. Re-exporting from Lightroom writes a new XMP packet.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between XMP and EXIF?
EXIF is camera data written at capture (GPS, model, exposure). XMP is an XML packet from editors and generators (presets, prompts, keywords). They are separate blocks.
What is the difference between C2PA and EXIF?
C2PA is a cryptographically signed provenance manifest. EXIF is unsigned camera info. Platforms use C2PA for AI disclosure far more than they use EXIF.
What is the difference between C2PA and XMP?
C2PA is signed claims about creation and edits. XMP is unsigned fields such as prompts and Lightroom history. Both can travel with the file; Instagram is known for reading C2PA.
Which type triggers AI labels most?
C2PA first, then XMP prompts. EXIF matters mainly for privacy unless a Software tag names an AI app.
What is image metadata?
Hidden data inside a JPEG or PNG - EXIF from the camera, XMP from editors, IPTC for captions and rights, C2PA for signed AI provenance, and sometimes PNG text chunks from local generators.
What is IPTC metadata?
Publishing fields such as caption, keywords, creator, and copyright. Often embedded in IIM blocks or inside XMP. Stock agencies read IPTC; social AI labels usually come from C2PA and XMP AI fields instead.
What is AI metadata in a photo?
Usually C2PA manifests, XMP prompts or Software tags, IPTC AI attribution fields, or PNG workflow chunks - not the visible pixels. Platforms read these for AI Info and Made with AI labels.
Can I remove all three at once?
Yes. One browser session strips C2PA, XMP, and EXIF together. There is no EXIF off switch - keep a master if you need shooting data. Remove AI Label Team
