How to Remove GPS and Location Data from Photos

March 17, 2026

Why photos contain location data

Most smartphones (and many cameras) have a “save location” or “tag location” option for the camera. When it’s on, the device writes GPS latitude and longitude into the image’s EXIF metadata. Some apps also add place names or “location created” in XMP or IPTC. Result: anyone with access to the file (or to a site that reads metadata) can see where the photo was taken.

Where location data can leak

The safest approach is to remove location (and ideally all metadata) before upload or send.

How to remove GPS from photos

1. Turn off location for the camera (for new photos)

This only affects new photos. Existing photos still have whatever was recorded when they were taken.

2. Strip metadata from existing photos (recommended before sharing)

Use a metadata remover that explicitly removes EXIF (and preferably XMP/IPTC). Upload the photo, choose options to remove EXIF and location data, then download the cleaned file. Share that file instead of the original.

Steps:

If you have many photos, use a tool that supports batch processing so you can clean a whole set at once.

3. Verify that location is gone

After stripping, you can check with:

If the tool only “hides” location in the UI but leaves it in the file, try a different remover that actually strips EXIF.

What else to remove with location?

Location is stored in EXIF, but EXIF also contains:

For maximum privacy, remove all EXIF (and XMP/IPTC if present), not just GPS. That way you avoid device fingerprinting and timestamp leaks as well.

Summary

GPS and other location data in photo metadata can reveal where you were when you took the shot. Turn off location for the camera to stop new photos from being tagged, and use a metadata remover to strip EXIF (and optionally XMP/IPTC) from existing photos before you share them. For a free, in-browser tool that removes GPS and all EXIF metadata (and supports batch), you can use Remove AI Label before uploading or sending - no account required, and files are processed locally on your device.

Upload workflow (2026)

Many creators chain camera → editor → design app → social . Each export can re-embed C2PA or XMP . Spot-check one hero file in the metadata checker before batch cleaning.

The AI metadata remover handles up to 30 images per browser session. Name cleaned files clearly (e.g. Social_Ready ) so teams do not re-upload older exports with manifests.

Carousels, ads, and client delivery

For carousels and ad sets , every slide must be cleaned. One contaminated frame can trigger platform AI labels on the whole post. Wedding, product, and real-estate photographers should deliver metadata-clean masters to clients - not RAW files with C2PA from Lightroom or Photoshop.

Platform notes

On Instagram , Pinterest , and TikTok , file-level C2PA/XMP is a common trigger for AI Info and Made with AI . Cleaning before upload addresses metadata-driven labels - not pixel watermarks or invisible scoring.

Team checklist

Keep RAW internal; only cleaned JPGs go to social or clients. After Adobe, Canva, or Meta AI updates, run one test export through the checker. Verify a sample before scheduling carousels.

Limits and compliance

Metadata stripping does not replace platform AI Info duties or legal requirements. Use only on files you own. See disclaimer .

Why metadata keeps coming back

Every save from Canva , CapCut , Lightroom , or Photoshop can rewrite provenance blocks. Re-clean before each upload wave - especially when clients re-export from design tools.

Batch naming convention

Use folders like Client_Delivery_Clean and Social_Ready so nobody uploads an older manifest-heavy export by mistake. The checker is fastest on one representative file per batch.

Final reminder

File-level cleaning helps when labels are metadata-driven. Follow each network's transparency rules - disclaimer .

Common mistakes after cleaning

Creators often clean once, then re-export from Canva or send files through WhatsApp - that can re-embed C2PA. Run the checker again on the exact file you will upload.

When labels persist

If AI Info or Made with AI remains after metadata removal, the trigger may be pixel-based (e.g. SynthID) or heuristic - not C2PA/XMP. See our disclaimer and platform policy pages.
